This self assessment essay is to reflect on the semester of this english class. One of the observations I made about my writing skills is that I have a hard time with introductions and I need to focus more on this in the future. I take most my time coming up with what to write in the introduction then any other part. Phase 1 was a very personal essay that made me put more description to help the reader imagine. Phase 2 I had to write a rhetorical analysis essay about one of the readings we had during this semester. Phase 3 was my favorite essay and it was a research essay on a debatable topic and finally Phase 4 was this essay a self assessment essay. All these essays helped me grow as a writer and helped me see where I could improve.
Phase 1 I started getting used to the format of how we were learning. The major thing we did and continued to do for all these phases was an essay. For this face we did a Language and Literacy Narrative where we had to write about a specific time period or a story that includes specific details. My essay was about my struggle with anxiety and how I grew as a person from freshman year through senior year. This essay was very personal and I developed the skill of adding graphic and specific details to make my essay more realistic.
The second Phase was the hardest essay due to formatting and not being used to writing rhetorical essays. It was the essay that I had to search up the most on and when I say this I mean searching up on how to write a rhetorical essay correctly and what needs to be in the essay. There were a lot of different things I had to include like the author, when it was published, who the audience was and the rhetorical strategies involved. For this essay I wrote about the excerpt from Learning how to read by Malcolm X and before I even started writing I wrote bullet points for everything I needed and then separated them into paragraphs so I made sure I didn’t miss anything. What I learned from this essay was how to write a rhetorical essay because before this I had never worked on one.
Phase 3 was my favorite because I got to research a topic I was very interested in which was the Golden age. I love doing research and I love history so I really enjoyed this essay so it came easier to me. The challenge in this essay was the fact that I had to write about a topic that was debatable and my topic even though did not seem like it just briefly looking at it once I started reading became debatable because the way it was described or seen by many was not the whole truth. I learned how to do a different format of research essay from this face.
Phase 4 is the self assessment essay I’m writing right now. This is a topic i have briefly written about for other english classes. We have never been assigned a whole essay to self access so this opens experience to this type of essay now. I think it’s good to self reflect on the writing and to see what I have grown in which is experience and what still needs help in which is introductions in general.
